A Guide to Tipping Movers
What should you tip a mover who has moved your belongings to your new apartment? Follow these guidelines to learn how — and how much — to tip movers.
Is tipping movers expected?
Ask 10 people what you should tip your mover, and you’ll probably get 10 different answers. Movers likely don’t expect to be tipped, but it is a nice gesture for someone who has done all the heavy lifting.
If you do decide to tip, it is helpful to pay tips in cash. Plan ahead to have the correct bills on hand.
Movers tipping guide
There are two ways you can figure up the tip: A percentage of your total moving cost, or a certain amount per mover. If you choose a percentage, then a general figure is about 5 percent, which could be about $10 per mover for an in-town move under a thousand dollars.
If you choose to tip each mover regardless of the total amount, then you should consider this: If your move only took a few hours (say three or four), $10 per mover is a nice tip. If it took a full day, you might want to increase the amount.
Here are some things to consider when making your tipping decision:
- How was the move? Like all services, you should tip based on how well the job was performed. Did you have a good move? Tip a little extra. Bad move? You might withhold part of the tip.
- Was your move difficult? Lots of stairs? Lots of heavy furniture? You might want to throw in a little extra.
- Make sure to tip each mover instead of giving it to one person to distribute.
Tipping alternatives
Tipping the movers doesn’t necessarily have to be in cash in their hands at the end of the day. Because movers do not expect tips, they might appreciate a nice lunch in the middle of the day. Consider providing bottled water, sodas and snacks, especially if your move is taking the better part of a day.
When in doubt, ask
When first arranging your move, you can easily find out the moving company’s policy regarding tips — some may not want you to tip the movers at all. Inquire directly about the company’s tipping policy when you make your moving reservation.
Above all, use your own judgment about whether and how much to tip your movers. Don’t feel pressured to hand out a big tip if you can’t afford it or don’t think the movers did a good job. While tipping is a nice gesture that will be appreciated, it is, in the end, not an absolute requirement.
