Dealing with Weather Conditions When You Move

Bad weather can make a complicated moving day even more so, but a little bit of advance planning can reduce the effects an unexpected change in the weather might have on your move. Here are some tips for planning for and dealing with weather conditions when you move.

  • Start monitoring the weather forecast in advance of your move. Sites such as Weather Underground can give you forecasts by zip code, as well as discussions about current weather trends. Pay particular attention to any special weather advisories. WeatherUSA and The Weather Channel will send text messages to your cell phone or e-mail with severe weather alerts near you if you sign up for this information.
  • Determine which of your belongings cannot risk exposure to rain and pack accordingly. You may want to add extra layers of protection when you pack, load valuable items into your car rather than the moving truck, or even try and move your most precious possessions ahead of time if you have a clear day.
  • If you’re moving in winter, with a strong potential for snow and ice on the roads, make sure your moving truck is equipped. Talk to your truck rental company about snow chains for the truck’s tires, scrapers, and de-icing material. (You may be charged an extra fee.) And make sure you wear clothing that will protect you from cold weather conditions.
  • Remember that driving a moving truck is different from driving your car; you’ll need to adjust. Don’t drive your truck at the same speeds at which you’d drive your car in the rain, for instance. For safety’s sake, assume the truck’s brakes will not be quite as responsive as your car’s brakes.
  • Be ready to adapt to conditions, when possible. If it’s raining, you won’t be able to set boxes down outside. If the sky is clear but the ground is still wet from recent rains, however, you can set down a plastic tarp on which to place boxes, for instance.
  • Rain isn’t the only weather that can complicate a moving day. If you’re moving during an unseasonably hot day, you’ll have to adjust your move to make sure no one gets overheated. Make sure you and everyone helping you move has plenty of water and sunscreen on hand. Park the moving truck in the shade, if possible, and take frequent breaks.
  • Don’t pack your umbrella! Keep it handy.
