Decorating Your Apartment Dining Room

Decorating Your Apartment Dining RoomWith all the energy spent decorating other rooms in your apartment, the dining room is often overlooked. It’s usually sparsely furnished and isn’t nearly as large or frequently used much as say, the living room. But the dining room can be a focal point during parties, and with space often limited in apartments, is more than likely very visible from other rooms. So it’s important not to ignore your dining room. Use these dining room decorating tips to make your apartment dining room stand out.

Separate your space
Many apartments do not have a formal dining room or have a dining area that tends to blend in with the kitchen or living room. So look at different ways you can separate the apartment dining room from other areas:

  • Carve out some extra space next to the kitchen or living room. If you don’t have a lot of space, choose a small round table or even a bar-height table with just a couple of chairs.
  • Separate your dining space with a decorative screen or curtain.
  • If your kitchen has a bar overlooking the living room, add bar stools for a dining nook.
  • If you have space next to a wall, paint it a vibrant color to set it off from other living areas.
  • Don’t use your apartment dining room for other purposes — storage, office, etc. You might regret it when you’re eating off your coffee table.

Add extra space and storage
Because apartments in general don’t offer a lot of room or storage space, you can create some in your dining room:

  • Use a table with a removable leaf so you can make it bigger only when you need more room.
  • If you use a bench along a wall instead of chairs, consider using one that has storage space under the cushions.
  • If you have the room, put a buffet, breakfront or china cabinet next to the table for more dish and serving storage.
  • If all you have is a corner, then you’ve got room for a dining room. Add a corner dinner table with a bench.
  • When short on space, consider a table that has a side that can fold down flat so you can push it up against a wall when not in use.
  • You can always go thinner — pick a skinny dining table for tight spaces.

Don’t skimp on decorating
Apartment dining rooms don’t have to be flashy, but don’t ignore them either. Add color to the wall to set it apart from other rooms, or put a colorful rug under the table to add some extra oomph. You can also put a runner on the table, a nice centerpiece or a pretty tablecloth to make your dining room stand out.

Great article on decorating an apartment dining room! It is such a great idea to really separate the space for your dining room. A lot of times apartments don’t come with an actual dining room so it ends up being more of just a space within the living room or kitchen area. You gave some really great ideas on how to split up this space. Another idea is to simply use a floor rug to help outline the area. Thanks for the great advice!
