Destinations for St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations

If you live by the motto “Erin Go Bragh” (“Ireland Forever”), then you are surely looking forward to a rollicking St. Patrick’s Day party. This year, take it out of town and see what the rest of the world has to offer. Your neighborhood pub will miss you, but you can bring back great stories for your fellow patrons when you return home.

New York City, NY
If you love a parade, then you don’t want to miss the largest St. Patrick’s Day Parade in the United States. This tradition started in 1762 as a military parade with Irish soldiers parading through the streets to honor their countrymen. Now, over 150,000 marchers entertain 2 million spectators through the streets of New York.

Boston, MA
Boston may not have the largest St. Patrick’s Day parade, but it is the oldest celebration in the country. Bostonians have been kicking up their heels since 1737, and now roughly 850,000 people attend the festivities. The American War Veterans Council hosts this impressive parade that runs from West Broadway to Dorchester Avenue.

Chicago, IL
Need more than just one parade? Chicago hosts two St. Patrick’s Day parades: one Downtown and one on the South Side. Don’t miss the green river. Yep, Chicagoans love this holiday so much they dye the Chicago River green for the occasion. That’s commitment!

Savannah, GA
Send your shamrock to Savannah for the second largest parade in the U.S. They start their morning off with a Mass to honor St. Patrick, and then the city cuts loose with a grand parade and parties that last through the night.

San Francisco, CA
San Franciscans dance a jig at the grandest St. Patrick’s Day parade on the West Coast. Their annual event invites visitors from all walks of life to embrace Irish culture for a day and take part in their traditions. This is an excellent family-friendly event.

New London, WI
You may not have considered jetting off to New London, Wisconsin, to celebrate your St. Patrick’s Day holiday, but as far as event travel goes, this stop is a real treat. The town is so proud of its St. Patrick’s Day Celebration that they change the city’s name to New Dublin for a whole week! Festivities include a re-enactment of Finnegan’s Wake that you don’t want to miss.

Dublin, Ireland
If you are craving international St. Patrick’s Day travel, then head to Dublin for their St. Patrick’s Festival. In the past, this religious holiday was celebrated by closing businesses and attending church. Now the Irish have embraced the American version of St. Patrick’s partying and offer a high-energy festival with parades, music and cultural events.

Nagoya, Japan
You don’t have to speak English or Irish to enjoy a good St. Patrick’s Day party. When you are choosing destinations for your festivities, don’t overlook Nagoya, Japan. The Irish Japanese Network keeps traditions going overseas, and Nagoya throws fantastic parades and parties.

St. Patrick’s Day travel makes for a shamrockin’ good time, no matter which destination you choose. So pick a spot listed here or check out other parades across the U.S.
