Dividing Assets

ag.story.divideassetsYou’ve found the perfect roommate! Before moving in (or shortly after) several things should be discussed. Consider putting decisions in writing to avoid future arguments. Here are a few things that should be discussed before moving in with your roommate so you don’t argue about them later.

How will the rent be split? Unless one room is significantly larger this is usually 50/50.

How will utilities be split? Usually 50/50 with long distance call paid by individual that made them.

How will common space and common use items be shared? Be specific regarding any rules you may have regarding furniture or appliances in common areas. If you have a white couch that you don’t want anyone putting their feet on, say so in the beginning.

Do you want to share a computer? Since so many people have their own computer you should consider how you both will connect to the internet. You may also want to consider sharing the price of equipment to allow you both to connect wirelessly.

How will how housework be split? Just remember that any chore you sign up for that you actually have to do it.

Do they want to share? Some people don’t like to have their stuff touched. Make sure you and your new roommate understand what is for everyone’s use and what is off limits.
