Finding a Child-Friendly Apartment

Finding a Child-Friendly ApartmentFinding just the right apartment when you don’t have kids is often a challenge, but when you do have children, there are even more aspects of your housing to consider. We’ve assembled the key things to look out for when searching for a child-friendly apartment.

Safety
Just because a prospective apartment feels safe to you, as an adult, doesn’t mean it’s suitable for your children. Consider the presence of balconies, steep stairs, poorly lighted areas or its proximity to busy streets. An ideal apartment community will have plenty of pedestrian walking and playing areas away from cars.

Location
Living in an apartment community within walking distance of your child’s school is a great bonus. Not only can you avoid dealing with buses or carpools, but it’s nice to have your child nearer to home in case of illness, school events or half-days.  Having a school nearby also means access to a playground and the probability of other children in your building and in the neighborhood.

You should also consider choosing a new apartment near a park or library – both are ready-made centers of kid-focused activities and socializing.

Amenities
A swimming pool, properly fenced and monitored, is a great plus in an apartment community. Private pool memberships are generally expensive and public pools can be crowded, especially during summer months.  Ready access to a pool provides an all-day destination right outside your front door.  It also offers a place for your child to learn how to swim without having to pay for lessons.  Some apartment communities also have playgrounds on site.

When looking for a child-friendly apartment, the three most important things to consider are safety, location and the amenities in your new apartment community. Thinking ahead to what your kids will need and enjoy in a new home will help ensure that you’ll all be happy there for a long time to come.
