Helping Resources for Veterans

Whether you served in the armed forces, or care about someone who has served, know that there are quite a few resources available to help veterans. Here are some suggestions to find help for veterans in need, whether the need is emotional, financial, social, or medical.

General help

  • Search for local Vet Centers by zip code. Run by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), these centers offer counseling, employment assessment, and help using and understanding benefits.
  • MilitaryOneSource aims to be a clearinghouse for active-duty soldiers, veterans, and families, even civilians working for the Department of Defense. Its offerings include counseling hotlines and webinars on a variety of topics.
  • Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America focuses on more recently-serving veterans, offering advice on managing the transition back home.
  • Veterans of Foreign Wars aims to help soldiers both old and new, from those currently deployed to retired veterans. Its “Unmet Needs” program helps families who are facing financial difficulties related to a recent deployment.
  • Military, Veterans and Patriotic Service Organizations of America (MVPSOA) has a list of approved charities on its Web site, including those offering scholarships to veterans and their children.

Help for physically-injured veterans

  • The Wounded Warrior Project includes programs for both wounded veterans and their caregivers, and can match both with peer mentors.
  • American Veterans with Brain Injuries offers service and outreach programs to veterans who have suffered traumatic brain injuries.
  • Disabled American Veterans keeps local offices across the country and can give rides to VA hospitals.
  • VETWOW is specifically aimed at veterans who suffered a sexual trauma while serving in the military, and has resources for claiming related benefits.

Financial resources for vets

Female veterans

  • Grace After Fire offers an online community where female veterans can exchange stories and advice.
  • US VETS has specific programs available for women veterans, including those who are disabled and those with children.

Counseling

  • Give an Hour offers free mental health services to soldiers, veterans, and their families.
  • The National Center for PTSD, offered by the VA, has information on where to find treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
  • TAPS (Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors) is aimed at those who are mourning a fallen soldier; it sponsors “Good Grief Camps” for children and offers counseling.
