Host a Mardi Gras Party at Home

Let the good times roll New Orleans-style this Mardi Gras season by hosting an apartment party to celebrate the occasion. Your party at home can be nearly as much fun as a trip to New Orleans. You just need these key ingredients to throw a Mardi Gras party that your friends will be talking about all year long.

February fun
Mardi Gras is officially celebrated on Fat Tuesday. It’s the day before Ash Wednesday when celebrants indulge themselves in preparation for giving up favorite treats during Lent. This day usually falls on a Tuesday between early February and early March. Traditionally, most Mardi Gras parties happen in February, so pick a date during that month that works best for you and your friends.

Your own colorful krewe
New Orleans, Louisiana, is famous for its Mardi Gras celebrations, and the locals host parades that wind through their neighborhoods, though the main parade in the French Quarter is one the most popular. The festivities include parties or balls held by krewes who also build custom floats for the parades. Each krewe has its own name like Krewe of Bacchus, Krewe of Rex or Krewe Delusion.

You might think up a special name for your own personal krewe and include it on your invitations. During the party you can vote for a King and Queen of your krewe. Stock up on Mardi Gras party supplies like beads and masks, and don’t forget to dress in purple, green and yellow, the official colors of the day.

Potent punch
A Mardi Gras theme party wouldn’t be complete without a special drink. Hurricane Punch is a favorite in New Orleans, and you can mix up your own version of this tasty passion fruit elixir at home, with or without the alcohol added. If you aren’t passionate about passion fruit, there are plenty of alternate concoctions to try. The Sazerac Cocktail was named the official drink of New Orleans in 2008 and is an excellent traditional sipper to punch up your Mardi Gras party.

Traditional taste
Where there are drinks, there is food, and Mardi Gras is the perfect time to pull out all the stops. Make a Mardi Gras menu that rivals New Orleans’ most treasured restaurants. Gumbo, jambalaya, muffalettas, po-boys and pralines are all classic choices for your Mardi Gras buffet. Make your event complete by purchasing a King Cake, which you can buy online or perhaps from your local grocer’s bakery department. A tiny plastic baby is baked into every King Cake, and tradition has it that whoever gets the baby in their slice gets to host the next Mardi Gras party.

Mardi Gras music
The final addition to your grand Mardi Gras party should be festive music — but not just any ‘ol music. You need zydeco and jazz music to infuse real New Orleans flavor into your apartment party. Professor Longhair is a long-time favorite, or make a playlist that mixes in a variety of artists. Your krewe will be doing the Mardi Gras Mambo all night long!

Now that you’ve got your ingredients list, throw on your Mardi Gras beads and start shopping for your apartment Mardi Gras party supplies! Laissez les bon temps rouler!
