How to Pack Your Portable Storage Unit for Transit

If you’re moving a long distance, renting a portable storage unit can help make your move cheaper and easier. Because these units can get jostled around in transit, however, it’s in your best interest to pack your portable storage unit carefully so the items inside have less chance of getting damaged on their journey.

Here are some tips for packing your portable storage unit.

Your first order of business is to protect individual items.

  • Store/pack items in special boxes such as cushioned mirror boxes, boxes with a clothing rack for clothes on hangers or boxes designed to hold electronic equipment.
  • Wrap furniture with furniture pads (or blankets, in a pinch).
  • Add extra, soft items, such as towels or pillows, to boxes that aren’t full.
  • Wrap bubble wrap around breakable items.
  • Place any mattress or box spring in a plastic bag designed for that purpose.
  • Disassemble items such as tables (place the screws and other hardware in a small plastic bag and tape to the table to make reassembly easier later).

Once you’ve packed each item carefully, it’s time to pack the storage unit.

  • Pack the heaviest boxes and other items first, placing lighter items on top.
  • Store couches and mattresses on their sides. Don’t balance boxes on a mattress.
  • A refrigerator should be loaded with its doors slightly open.
  • Store mirrors and pictures in frames on their sides.
  • Use rope or bungee cords to secure items in place in the unit, if possible.
  • Ask the company that rented you the portable storage unit whether they have absorbent packs to absorb moisture and help prevent mildewing in transit.

Try to anticipate how items might shift. Could a column of boxes fall? What might happen if your portable storage unit were turned on its side?

One last tip: do what you can to take inventory of the items you pack in your portable storage unit. An inventory will make it easier to unpack and to keep track of your items once they’ve arrived at your new home.
