How To Walk A Dog In Your Apartment Community

ag.story.walkdogOwning a dog can be very rewarding, but making sure your pet gets enough exercise can be challenging if you live in an apartment that doesn’t feature ample outdoors recreation space. But walking your dog is a must and is doable, even in the most restrictive apartment communities. Here are some tips on how to safely walk a dog around your community.

Be aware of the rules
Before you move in, check with your landlord to make sure that your pet is even allowed, and if so, what accommodations and restrictions there are on dogs. There could be a weight limit, prohibitions on where your dog can go on the property and what kind of leash is required to protect other tenants. Know what the rules are before you venture outside.

If you’re lucky, your apartment community may feature space for dogs or is located near a park. Ask your management team what is available.

Be safe
Knowing your dog’s behavior is essential to walking it outside. If you know your dog does not like children, avoid the community playground and pool area. If your dog is afraid or aggressive toward people, chart out a path that avoids common areas and other tenants. Does your dog get along with other animals? If not, be aware of where they are — and what you need to do if you can’t control your pet.

You may also want to note where the most activity is around your apartment community in case your dog is just distracted. Avoiding activity will keep your pet from getting excited and pulling on the leash.

The Scoop on Dog Training offers tips on making sure your pet is a good outdoor dog. But if you really want to be safe, consider using a leash such as a Gentle Leader, recommended by dog trainers because it allows the owner more control over the animal without pain and is designed to work with the dog’s natural instincts.

Be courteous
Even if your dog is not aggressive, it’s still important to be courteous to your fellow tenants. You can have the sweetest dog ever, but many people don’t like, are afraid of or are allergic to dogs, so keep your pet away from them unless they invite the contact. That’s why it’s important to keep your pet on a leash at all times while walking around your apartment community, unless you take it to a dog park, where it is expected.

Just as important is cleaning up after your dog. It is inconsiderate to other tenants and most often against your lease to allow your pet to make a mess outside and not clean it up. Many apartment communities can and will fine you if you do not clean up after your dog.
