July 4th Celebrations Not to Miss
On Independence Day, check out these cities where you can really celebrate your freedoms.
From Brooklyn, N.Y., to Los Angeles, Calif., you can find a host of unique July 4th celebrations. If you live in or near these major cities, consider making the visit to celebrate America’s birthday.
- Atlanta 4th of July festivities kick off with the Peachtree Road Race, one of the city’s favorite traditions. The race is followed by the Atlanta 4th of July celebration in Centennial Olympic Park with live music and entertainment, followed by a rousing fireworks display.
- In Boston, the 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular is a pageant appropriate for the locale of one of America’s most revered acts of defiance, the Boston Tea Party. The Boston Pops bring musical greatness to the event, which is held along the Charles River.
- One of the biggest July 4th celebrations in the country — and one of the oldest — can be found in Columbus, Ohio, with the famed Red, White and Boom Celebration . This extravaganza features more than a hundred parade floats, live music, face-painting and clowns. The night is capped off with a fireworks display over the Great Miami River.
- Nathans Famous Frankfurters celebrates America’s birthday by throwing the famous Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest in the Coney Island area of Brooklyn, NY. (Joey Chestnut of San Jose, Calif., won recently by eating 62 hot dogs in 10 minutes.)
- Cities which were key to America’s struggle for independence certainly pull out all the stops for the Fourth. For example, Philadelphia’s July 4th will offer up fireworks, food and the largest free concert in America this year in the City of Brotherly Love.
- And the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C., won’t be outdone. Washington, D.C.’s July 4th celebration is a huge affair with a large parade on Constitution Avenue and 7th Street during the day and an unrivaled fireworks display at night over the nation’s monuments. But Washington, D.C., doesn’t content itself with just one festival. There are numerous opportunities to celebrate July 4th that day, from the Mall to the Smithsonian.
