Keeping Your Bathroom Clean

Keeping Your Bathroom CleanOf all the apartment cleaning that must be done, the bathroom might be many people’s least favorite room to tackle. Not only is there a certain “ick” factor involved, but bathrooms have different surfaces, crooks and crannies that don’t make cleaning easy. It must be done, though, not only for your health but for the overall tidiness of your apartment. Here’s how to tackle the unsavory job.

Get the proper tools for the job
It’s not enough to have an all-purpose cleaner — although that’s a good place to start. Properly cleaning your bathroom takes some good supplies:

  • A sponge can be your best friend in cleaning. Buy one with a rough side to scrub off tough stains.
  • All-purpose cleaner is great on the tub, the sink and toilet. Get one that’s also antibacterial to really wipe out germs that linger in bathrooms.
  • Besides the all-purpose cleaner, buy glass spray to wipe down the mirror.
  • Shower squeegees are great for glass doors.
  • Magic erasers — like the ones sold by Mr. Clean — are easy and disposable cleaning tools great for all surfaces.
  • Wet wipes or cleansing wipes are good for some everyday spot cleaning that’ll save you time later.
  • Shower scrub brushes — even some that look similar to brooms — have longer handles to help you scrub the entire height of the shower.
  • Buy toilet cleanser and a toilet brush to keep your toilet clean and free of mildew.

Everyday cleaning
If you don’t like cleaning the bathroom once a week, you really won’t like doing it every day. But if you do some spot cleaning every day — such as wiping down the counters in the morning or at night after brushing your teeth or applying makeup — it’ll lessen how much cleaning you have to do later. Cleaning experts recommend wiping down the sink area every day. It works for hotel bathrooms, so it’ll work for yours too.

The aforementioned shower squeegee will also reduce your labors later if you use it every day. Keep it in the shower and use it before you dry off. Some companies sell “spray and go” mixtures that are to be used every day, but reviews vary wildly on how effective they are.

Tips
Everyone has their own method of cleaning, but cleaning experts have some tips that could help you out:

  • Spray on cleansers and then let them sit for a few minutes before starting your cleaning. This allows  time to really penetrate the dirt.
  • DoItYourself.com recommends coating the shower walls and door with car wax — but not the floor — to keep water spots and dirt away.
  • Partially fill the tub with the hottest water you have and let it sit for a few minutes to help your cleanser penetrate the dirt.
  • Turn on the exhaust fan if you have one to help clear out the odors from the cleansers.
  • Don’t forget to vacuum or dust the air vents.
  • Sweep and mop the floors last, moving towards the door.

It might take some work, but keeping your bathroom clean is a must for any apartment.
