A new year inspires us to make resolutions and try new things. If you are ready to get out in your community and find opportunities for meeting new people, connect with one of these popular social networks to find folks with similar interests (or interesting, different ones!)
Meetup.com
Meetup is a great social networking site that allows you to connect with people online and then “meet up” face-to-face. This site is managed by the members/organizers, and membership is free. Meetup events take place all over the United States, and it’s easy to search for groups in your hometown that plan activities in your interest areas. Find people to hang out with for book clubs, hiking groups, playing board games… whatever your interest, there is likely a Meetup group whose members share your enthusiasm. As unique Meetup groups form every day, try something you already love or branch out and experience something new you’ve been wanting to explore.
Facebook.com
You may be using Facebook to meet up with your existing friends, but did you know you also have easy access to unexpected activities? Look in the menu bar at the Events tab and click on “Suggested Events.” This links you up with public events that your friends are attending and just may open up a whole new set of friendly connections for you.
Twitter.com
Twitter is more than just tweeting. You can actually use this tool to track down trends and events happening right in your own backyard. If you check out the menu at the top, you’ll notice a “Find People” link. Click there for options like “Suggested” people to follow and “Interests” that you can follow, as well. Both tabs let you choose people and topics you find interesting, so you can keep up with the trend-setters. For example, if you follow a local DJ, then you might see tweets about where she’s spinning this weekend. You can also “Find Friends” and follow them to keep an eye on the activities they are attending and tweeting about.
Likemind.us
Another great tool that is similar to Meetup groups is Likemind. These online groups can be found across the world; they meet in person each month for coffee and conversation. You can subscribe to get email updates, or just look up the group in your area to see when and where they are meeting.
Tribe.net
One more fun way to meet people with similar interests is to find your tribe – starting at the Tribe web site, of course. This online networking site connects you to users around the world based on categories like music, travel, business and more. Once you connect with other members virtually, you can contact them to meet face-to-face. The “Cities & Neighborhoods” category is your best bet for finding locals to reach out to for activities in your hometown.
Make a fresh start this new year by connecting with like-minded people online and offline for activities you all enjoy. Explore these sites and look for new discoveries of your own to add to the list!
