Organizing a Studio Apartment

Organizing a Studio ApartmentWe all know there are few spaces more challenging to live in comfortably than a studio apartment. But it can be done and done well. We’ve collected some handy tips to help you live lean, yet comfortably, in your studio apartment.

No clutter allowed
When your square footage is at a minimum, keeping things orderly is not optional. Do your best to keep your apartment uncluttered. Any lapse in your diligence could mean the difference between being buried in stuff or being happily in control of your studio apartment. Each day, sort and purge your mail, other excess paper and general detritus and put everything away — clothes, books, dishes — immediately.

In your tiny abode, you can’t wait to sort the laundry, clean the dishes or put your daytime outfit away. When it comes to apartment organizing, especially a tiny one, immediacy is the key to keeping everything where it belongs  For loads of decluttering and organizing tips, visit organizational sites such as Flylady.com or find a professional organizer near you.

Multitasking furniture
In a studio apartment, your sofa might be your bed, and your table is for eating and telecommuting. Think multi-use when it comes to choosing your furniture, because there is no luxury of space to allow a piece to do simply one thing. Do you have room for an ottoman? Choose one with storage space inside. Perhaps choose a dresser with room for your television and DVD player on top. Get creative and efficient by making all of your furniture do double- or triple-duty.

Clever storage
Most studio apartments are, not surprisingly, short on storage space. That means that every surface should be maximized. Look up: how about a rack for pots and pans so that the apartment’s few cupboards can hold other items? Inside cupboards and closets use shelf dividers and over-the-door racks and add organizers to all your drawers. If it’s okay with the landlord, install racks or shelves on every available wall. Now, go under things. Beneath your bed, sofa and coffee tables are all prime real estate for attractive bins and boxes that keep useful items out of the way.

Living in a studio apartment doesn’t have to mean having a cramped home in which you war with your worldly possessions. Be diligent about cleaning up clutter and any messes, get creative with furniture and storage, and your little space will be a cozy sanctuary, rather than an over-crowded closet.
