Sample Letter: Giving Notice to Your Apartment Manager
When the time comes for you to give notice to your landlord you’ll want to find just the right words. We’ve provided a sample letter of what you should say.
Before you begin, make sure to read over your lease and confirm that the wording of our sample letter, as well as your planned notification process, complies with that document. Don’t forget to include the date the letter was written, the date you’ll be leaving your apartment and a forwarding address. If you are breaking your lease, there are some additional considerations.

(Landlord or apartment manager’s name and address as it appears in the lease)
Re: Notice of intent to vacate
Dear (Name of landlord or manager),
This letter constitutes my written (number of days notice that you need to give) -day notice that I will be leaving my apartment on (date), the end of my current lease.
I am leaving because (new job, rent increase, etc. If there are problems with the apartment, your landlord would probably like to know, but be diplomatic—you have your rental history to consider).
I expect that my security deposit of $___, given to you on (date), will be refunded in full, since the apartment has been left in good condition.
I can be reached at (new phone number and address) after (your moving day).
Sincerely,
(your name)
Now all you have to do is fill in the blanks. If you are mailing your notice, be sure to follow up with a phone call to make sure that your landlord received it.
