Things to Consider if You Move Often

Things to Consider if You Move OftenWhile moving is, for many people, an occasional life event, some find themselves moving more often. People may move for work, for family, or by personal preference. Whatever the reason, if you’re a frequent mover, take a look at a few tips that may help you prepare for your next move.

Pare it down
First, determine ways to make the moving process easier on yourself. Can you get rid of some extra belongings? Odds are, if you haven’t opened a box between one move and the next, you probably don’t need its contents. It might make sense, if you’re moving for a short-term assignment, to leave larger items such as furnishing in storage and rent a furnished apartment in your new city.

Find the familiar
If you’re a frequent mover, perhaps you need to establish touchstones that will make a new apartment feel homey and familiar. It may help to have some small but tangible items that remain constant from place to place: some artwork or photographs, or a favorite blanket on the bed. You may wish to establish some post-moving rituals, such as burning a particular favorite candle or cooking a favorite dinner, to help you ease into new surroundings and feel comfortable with the change.

Stay organized with a checklist
Another tough challenge for anyone, but especially those on-the-move, is staying organized.  Following a moving checklist can keep you on track amidst the chaos of a move and remind you to take care of important tasks, like filling out a change of address form or finding a new pharmacy where you can get your prescriptions filled. The blog MovinGal recommends keeping a notebook with two sections: one for your previous location, and one for your new one.

If you have time, and if you’re moving a long distance, you may want to request copies of important documents, such as medical records. These should be kept in a folder with important paperwork such as your Social Security card, irreplaceable photos, and any contracts you’ve signed with movers. Keep this folder in a safe place where you will remember to find it.

Take care of yourself
Finally, be gentle with yourself. If you have to choose between resting and unpacking, rest. As you establish routines for yourself in your new home, you might stake out territory that you claim as your own, such as the nearby coffee shop or library.

Even if you move for an exciting career you love, the act of frequent moving can feel stressful and disorienting. Find routines and ways to orient yourself wherever you are living, and the negative aspects of moving may seem less stressful.
