In your search for a pet-friendly apartment, give yourself and your furry friend the best possible chance with a glowing pet resume. Read on for what you’ll need to make your pet the most attractive four-legged resident around.
Veterinary records
Making your pet’s medical information available, including proof of vaccination, not only shows that he is a well-cared-for animal, but also that you are a conscientious owner. You can also include information about the flea/tick prevention steps you take with your pet and whether your pet has been spayed or neutered. (Pets that have been sterilized are often calmer than those that haven’t been.)
You can even ask your vet to comment on your pet’s temperament and personality. As a medical professional who might know your pet well, such a recommendation could help convince a potential landlord of your dog or cat’s good behavior.
Letters of recommendation
Property owners are looking to eliminate risk of damage and disruption as much as possible, so knowing that your pet is neither destructive, nor a chronic barker, might make the landlord more likely to rent the apartment.
To make the best possible case, prepare the same documentation for your pet which you might as a potential resident. Letters from a previous landlord or former neighbor that vouch for your pet’s behavior can be very persuasive. If you board your pet regularly or use a pet sitter, ask for a letter of recommendation from them, as well. The more glowing reports you have about your pet’s personality, the more it will help you rent a pet-friendly apartment.
Obedience training
Just as you put a description of your education and diplomas on your resume, your pet will benefit from having his training accomplishments highlighted. List the obedience classes he’s completed, as well as any comments or recommendations from instructors.
Creating a formal resume
You can gather all of the above details into a packet for your potential landlord or compile them in an actual resume format which also addresses your ability to control your pet, how you clean up after her, and how you board her during the day when you’re not at home. Include photographs to create a professional, convincing profile for your pet.
Playing up your own credentials doesn’t hurt either, especially if you are involved with the SPCA or another animal-related organization in your community. The more connected you are to the things that improve the lives of animals, the better a caregiver you may be—all good clues to a potential landlord on what great residents you and your pet will be.
Don’t just hope that your pet’s cute looks will convince a potential landlord of how great he is—create a pet resume and let the evidence do the talking!

Description
Dozer is a friendly dog who loves people. He is approximately 65lbs, neutered, four-year-old brown white Mastiff, Lab, and Pitbull mix. I have had him since he was a puppy and he is a cherished member of my family. If you have any questions about my dog, please ask.
Training:
Dozer has had obedience training at Petsmart when he was a puppy. He is fully housebroken and crate trained; he obeys voice commands. He does not bark excessively and sleeps most of the time especially when I am gone.
Activities:
Dozer goes on frequent walks with and runs errands with me. He is very friendly with other dogs. He likes to play with other dogs and loves to sit in people’s laps. After play time, he is contented and calm.
Health/Grooming:
Dozer was was neutered as a puppy. He is kept up-to-date on all vaccinations and receives regular health exams at the Banner Health in PetSmart. I bathe and brush (both teeth and fur) him often. He has never had a problem with fleas or other parasites as I keep him up to date on FrontLine.
About Me:
As a dog owner, I always act responsibly. I pick up after him, take him out to play, give him love and feed him healthy dog food. While growing up, my family had 3 dogs which I helped care for. Dogs have always been a part of my life and I feel that my life is richer because Dozer is in it. If I go out of town, he either stays with my sister or the Pet Hotel at Banner. I am committed to responsible, caring pet ownership.
Thanks so much, Vanessa, for sharing an excellent example of a pet resume! Much appreciated!
Mia is a 6lb Chiahuahua. She is spayed, 5 years old, and the furry baby I have always wanted. I am retired. I am also a disabled veteran and she serves me as my therapy dog. She cannot open the fridge or get the paper, but she sleeps with me and shares her loving heart with me.
